Rush, Benjamin
(4 ene. 1746, Byberry, cerca de Filadelfia, Pa., EE.UU.–19 abr. 1813, Filadelfia, Pa.).

Médico y líder político estadounidense. Asistió al College de Nueva Jersey en Princeton. Como médico fue un teórico dogmático que propuso que todas las enfermedades eran fiebres causadas por sobreestimulación de los vasos sanguíneos, que tenían un remedio simple: sangrías y purgas. Promovió el tratamiento humanitario de los enajenados mentales; su idea de que la locura tenía a menudo causas físicas constituyó un gran adelanto. Escribió el primer manual de química y el primer tratado de psiquiatría de EE.UU. Patriota estadounidense precoz y activo, miembro del Congreso continental, redactó una resolución que instaba a la independencia y firmó la Declaración de la Independencia.
